No Wedding Permit, But Still Some Rules

The good news is that you don’t need a wedding permit to elope at Lost Gulch if your group is 10 people or fewer. But there is one permit that matters, your photographer needs an OSMP (Open Space and Mountain Parks) permit to shoot here. It's a simple process, and most local photographers are already familiar with it. So while the red tape is minimal, there’s still a bit of planning involved.

It's Small, Crowded, and Tricky With Guests

Here’s the honest truth: Lost Gulch is stunning, but it’s not the kind of place you want to roll up to with a group of guests in formalwear. The overlook area itself is really small, just a little rocky ledge with barely enough space to stand. And it’s popular. Like, constantly busy. Between hikers, photographers, and tourists, it’s rarely empty. Add in the fact that parking is extremely limited, and it becomes clear why this spot just isn’t practical for larger weddings.

If you really want a quiet moment, do sunrise. It’s your best shot at avoiding the crowds (though you’ll still likely see a few other folks). Anytime after 7 or 8 a.m., especially on weekends, it starts to get packed and yes, people will absolutely walk right through your ceremony without blinking. If privacy matters to you, this might not be the ideal spot unless you’re keeping it ultra simple and intimate.

Best Time of Year

Mid-June through mid-October is your best bet for weather and accessibility. The road to Lost Gulch can close during the winter or after snowstorms, and it’s not always well-maintained in shoulder seasons. During the summer and fall, the drive is easier and the views are clear—think golden hour light on the peaks, and a crisp mountain breeze. Spring can be hit or miss with muddy trails and unpredictable weather.

Best Time of Day

Sunrise is king here. Not only do you get the softest, dreamiest light for photos, but you also avoid the chaos that comes later in the day. And honestly, there’s something kind of magical about saying your vows while the sun rises behind you. Sunset is beautiful too, but prepare for a packed overlook and little to no parking.

A Smarter Alternative

If you love the idea of Lost Gulch but want a little more breathing room, consider booking Sunrise Amphitheater just up the road for your actual ceremony. It’s still scenic, has designated space for guests, and you can always pop down to Lost Gulch afterward for portraits. That way, you get the best of both worlds, gorgeous views and a bit more peace of mind.
