How to Get a Permit

First thing’s first, you do need a permit to elope in Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s called a “Special Use Permit,” and you’ll need to apply through the official RMNP website. The cost is $300, and you should apply as early as possible, especially if you’re planning a summer or fall ceremony. Permits are limited to 60 per month and they go fast. You’ll need to specify your ceremony location and estimated guest count (up to the location’s limit).

Best Time to Elope in RMNP

Mid-June through mid-October is by far the most popular time to elope here. That’s when the trails are open, wildflowers are blooming, and the weather is mostly sunny and mild. Just keep in mind, summer can also bring more tourists and unpredictable afternoon storms, especially in July and August. If you're dreaming of snow-covered trees and cozy vibes, winter is still beautiful but keep in mind the town of Estes Park gets much quieter (and colder) with less open dining and activities since there’s no ski resort nearby.

Where You Can Elope in RMNP

Rocky Mountain National Park only allows ceremonies at specific designated sites, there are 12 of them to choose from. Each one has a guest limit, and some are easier to access than others. Here are a few favorites:

  • Sprague Lake – Up to 15 people. This is the most popular ceremony spot, and for good reason. Think calm lake, pine trees, and a stunning mountain backdrop.

  • Bear Lake – Up to 20 people. Close to the parking lot and very scenic, but it can get very busy.

  • Lily Lake Dock & Trail – Up to 10–20 people depending on the exact spot. Gorgeous views and a peaceful feel.

  • 3M Curve – Up to 15 people. Dramatic rock outcrop with panoramic views—feels super remote.

  • Upper Beaver Meadows – Up to 30 people. A more open meadow setting with nice views of the mountains.

You can find the full list on the official NPS website, and your photographer or planner might have tips on which sites are best depending on the season.

Best Time of Day to Elope in RMNP

Sunrise and sunset are magic here. Not only is the light soft and dreamy (golden hour photos), but temperatures are more comfortable and the crowds are lighter. Sunrise is especially good if you want privacy and don’t mind an early wake-up call. Sunset is perfect if you want to keep things more relaxed and maybe head to dinner afterward.

Alternative Places to Get Married Nearby

If you love the mountains but want a little more flexibility, check out Rocky Mountain Wedding Park. It’s a privately owned venue just outside the national park, designed specifically for weddings. You can still get epic views but with more freedom, like chairs, decorations, music, and a longer guest list.

Rules to Know

Rocky Mountain National Park keeps it simple (and strict) when it comes to elopements. Here’s what not to bring:

●  No chairs, arches, or other decorations

●  No amplified music or instruments

●  No rice, flower petals, confetti, or anything you have to toss

●  No drones

●  No blocking trails or access for other park visitors

Basically, leave no trace and keep it low-key. The good news? When the backdrop is this beautiful, you really don’t need much else.
